It is an inflammatory lesion found on the mouth and concentrated on the lips and the labial commisures or what you call the corners of the mouth. It can occur, just on one side, but usually it appears on the person bilaterally.
The disease is characterized by cracks or splits and these splits can bleed especially if the mouth is opened excessively and these cracks become ulcers with white crusts on the surfaces.

But they believe that once the lesions begin to manifest on the lips and mouth, it can be infected by Candida albicans or thrush as well as many other menacing pathogens. They also relate the frequency of the disease to people who are nutritionally deficient, especially that of Vitamin B, iron and zinc. Because the body is weaker and cannot efficiently ward-off the infection, a person who is nutritionally deficient surely gets the disease.
It occurs in higher probability with the elderly and children. Old people tend to lose all their teeth and they have dentures and when they continue to wear ill-fitting dentures, their bites collapse and deep furrows appear on the corners of their mouths. These furrows become perfect breeding grounds for the bacteria to grow and the disease process begins.
