Chronic Stomatitis Mouth Sores

Angular CheilitisWhen the tissues of the mouth are inflamed, this condition is called Stomatitis. There are a lot of things that can cause this very uncomfortable disease and these are:

  • Burns caused by the intake of hot food or liquid
  • Medications
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Allergic reactions
  • Infections

Canker mouth sores or apthous stomatitis is probably the most common form of stomatitis and to this day, there really is no specific cause to which you can credit it to. Nutritional deficiencies are believed to be the most likely cause and just like in any type of disease, identification of the cause if key to its management.

There are many different cures to Stomatitis mouth sores and in Ayurveda, where Stomatitis is known as “Mukhpak” there are several kinds of stomatitis treatment that you can use.

  • There is a mouthwash concoction formulated by combining Triphala (three fruits), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Manuka (dried grapes), and Jai (Jasminum auriculatom) leaves with honey.
  • You can also combine cold water, honey, Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) and alum to make another kind of mouthwash.
  • Jatyadi oil (Kamdudha) can be mixed with cream and this can be applied to your sores to alleviate the pain.
  • Khadiradi vati can also be sucked to alleviate pain and to cure the lesions.

Stomatitis mouth sores in Ayurveda occur in four different types and they are the following:

  1. Vataja – is a sore at corner of mouth that is extremely painful because sufferers even develop some sort of fissuring of the tongue. They can also develop some intolerance to cold food and drinks. Panchavan (five salts) is a good medication for this condition. As well as other locally applied oils and herbal medicines like Khadir, Arjun, gugulu, Tagar, Deodar, Shilajit, Erand and Jatamansi.
  2. Pittaja – in this type of angular stomatitis mouth sore, the sufferer will feel severe burning, redness and bitter taste in the mouth. Induced purgation is a good remedy for this kind of Stomatitis. There is also mouthwash that can be concocted out of suharcane juice, milk, grape juice and glucose water. Chewing of Dhatki leaves can also provide some relief.
  3. Kaphaja – this is the least painful of those already mentioned. The lesions can be quite sticky and they are very red. The mouth can be a little itchy and the patient can experience a certain level of salivation. For relief, Kutki salts and Kshars are good. Palash, Amalaki and Kshar can also be combined together to conconct a powerful mouthwash.
  4. Sannipataja – is the Stomatitis mouth sore with symptoms that can be compared to that of Vataja, Pittaja and Kaphaja. To find the right treatment for this one, you should be able to identify which among the three types mentioned above is most prominent.
