candida

The scientific name for thrush is oral candidiasis. It is an opportunistic infection that is brought about by the Candida class of fungi when the immune system of the affected body is compromised. It develops in the mucous membranes of the mouth, but can spread to the throat and esophagus causing more complications. It is quite common in infants.

About 30%-60% of all people have these fungi in their mouth, but most will have the ability to fight off an infection because the body’s autoimmune system keeps the number of fungi to levels that are harmless.

The immune system can be compromised by many factors, like drug therapies, diseases, medication, changes in the person’s physiology and hormonal imbalance, irritation and allergies, wearing dental apertures like braces or dentures and even psychological problems. All of these could lead to physical symptoms like:

• Red spots with a “creamy” top, hyperplastic growth
• The tongue starts peeling
• Dry skin around the corners of the mouth
• These areas will also feel tender or sore
• The available anti-fungal medications are quite formidable:

Nystatin
Ketoconazole
Triazoles
Amphoterecin B

The drugs are able to get rid of the yeast infections from two days to several weeks depending upon the severity of the infection and the drug taken. There is also the factor of the patient’s response to the medication to consider.

There are also other treatments that are more than just treating the infection as they come. A holistic approach would be concerned about keeping the host healthy to prevent more infections, and help the body fight off the current infection as well. These approaches include remedies that are herbal or homeopathic, but will also institute some lifestyle changes, including dietary habits, stress management, and activity levels.

Unfortunately, although there are always remedies to treat thrush infections, there are also certain medications that can also disturb the stability of beneficial microorganisms that are present on our mouths thus can also make oral thrush and other symptoms of infections to appear. For example, the intake of corticosteroids as treatment for skin fungal and bacterial infections can render our skin to have limited protection against other skin infections. Oral intake of antibiotics to cure infections can also weaken our immune system and be vulnerable to oral thrush. Women who are taking birth control pills inevitably will undergo changes in their hormones and metabolisms and this can make their body to be prone to certain diseases.
